Fabric weight affects drape, opacity, durability, comfort, decoration and freight cost. The right GSM is the weight that supports the product, customer and season.
Start with the product purpose
Define the target climate, retail position, desired drape and expected wash life before comparing swatches. GSM measures grams per square meter, but it does not describe fiber quality, yarn, knit density or finish. Two fabrics with the same GSM can feel and perform very differently.
Useful weight ranges
Light T-shirts often sit around 140-180 GSM, everyday retail tees around 180-220 GSM and structured premium tees around 220-300 GSM. Sweatshirts and hoodies commonly range from 280-480 GSM. Treat these ranges as a starting point and approve a washed sample.
Evaluate performance
Review opacity, stretch recovery, shrinkage, pilling, colorfastness and surface quality. For printed products, test ink coverage and curing. For embroidery, confirm the fabric can support the selected stitch density without distortion.
Approve a production standard
Record fiber content, construction, finished GSM tolerance, usable width, color, finish and performance requirements. Approve the actual bulk fabric or a sealed standard so the buyer and factory share an objective inspection reference.
